Dave Loebsack’s Statement on President Trump’s recent attacks on a Federal Judge
Iowa City, IA– Today, Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement regarding President Trump’s latest comments about the temporary stay of his executive order banning refugees, and his attacks on judges.
“I was heartened to learn yesterday that the federal court put a nationwide temporary stay on the President’s executive action banning refugees. However, it is disturbing to see the President of the United States attacking members of the judicial branch simply for disagreeing with him. Whether it was attacking a well respected judge in Indiana because of his ethnicity, or questioning the legitimacy of the 9th circuit federal court in a tweet, this kind of blatant attack on our independent judiciary has to stop. Every elementary school student in America learns about the importance of each branch of government and the checks and balances our Founders put in place. I suggest the Trump administration brush up on the Constitution and apologize to the judges he has attacked.
Furthermore, I call on President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Neil Gorsuch, to denounce these baseless attacks on our judicial system. If not, then he should immediately withdraw his name from consideration to serve on the Supreme Court, for anyone seeking to serve a lifetime term on our nation’s highest court must prove that they at minimum understand and respect the constitutionally defined role of the judicial branch of government as intended by our Founders.”
