MEET DAVE
Congressman Dave Loebsack is currently serving his second term in the United States House of Representatives. Dave fights for the needs and priorities of the hard working families residing in Iowa’s Second Congressional District, which encompasses much of Southeastern Iowa. And as a member of the House Education and Labor Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, he is able to play a key role in shaping policy that affects people all across the country.
Dave was born in Sioux City and was raised by a single mother. Times were tough for the Loebsack family; Dave spent his childhood in poverty and relied on the support of his grandmother, teachers, friends and mentors to find the strength to overcome personal hardships. Dave’s experience growing up, with the support of so many coming together to help make his dreams possible, reinforced his awareness of what help can do. He has used that experience to inform his votes and policies in the House of Representatives.
As a result of his early life experiences, Dave has spent his career in public service dedicated to fulfilling the shared responsibility we all bear to help our neighbors through service and selflessness. As Dave advanced in his career and became further involved in his community, he became concerned about the struggles facing middle-class Americans, and he saw hard working Iowa families watch their dreams slip further and further away. Dave ran for Congress to once again make government a positive force in people’s lives; he believes we must restore hope and opportunity in the lives of Iowans, the same hope and opportunity that pushed him to pursue a better life.
Throughout his terms in Congress, Dave has worked with his colleagues – both Democrats and Republicans – to provide people with wages that can support a family, proper support for service members and military families, health care that you can count on and afford, a retirement that is dignified and secure, energy costs that don’t break the family budget and first-rate schools for our children. Congressman Loebsack has worked diligently to create and pass legislation that improves the everyday lives of hard-working Iowans.
As Dave travels throughout the 15 counties in the Second District, he continues to champion the issues that matter most to our families, seniors, veterans, farmers, students, and small businesses.
Before getting elected to Congress in November 2006, Dave was a teacher at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon for 24 years. Dave and his wife, Terry, call Mt. Vernon, Iowa home. Terry, a retired school teacher, taught second grade in Mt. Vernon for 28 years. Their 4 grown children that live all across the country.
